What is insulin resistance?

Insulin is the hormone that interacts with the cells in your body to help you move the excess blood glucose out of your blood to be used for energy or stored for later use. When we chronically consume a higher carbohydrate diet and insulin is constantly produced, we can develop insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is when the cells and tissues in your body become resistant to the effects of insulin. If your body does not respond appropriately to insulin, glucose will build up and your pancreas will secrete more insulin leading to insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance has been linked to several unwanted health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and other metabolic syndromes.

Insulin resistance can be driven by eating a high sugar, high carbohydrate diet, lack of physical activity, chronic stress, and having excess body fat.
